The Pontchartrain History

The Pontchartrain is a 14-story converted hotel built in 1927 that represents the apotheosis of luxury.

Stars such as Richard Burton and Mary Martin stayed in this hotel. Many prominent New Orleanians such as Edith Stern, the Sears and Roebuck heiress, and Frankie Besthoff, whose family co-founded the K&B drugstore chain, called it home.

It is the home of the famed Caribbean Room with its pastoral murals and was frequented by Walt Disney, Charles Laughton and Tennessee Williams. It began with a small group of permanent residents who lived among the visitors, many of them society matrons who moved there to retire and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle of St. Charles Ave. In many ways, we are returning to our roots.

In developing this project, we are keeping the historic ambiance of our former years.

The Caribbean Room is returning as the elegant restaurant of the past to serve as the dining room for our residents. The Bayou Bar, with its hand painted murals, will again serve the palates of thirsty customers. Our Founder’s Room will cater to private parties and celebrations for our residents and their guests. The Club Room, with its “Window to the Avenue”, will provide its patrons an historic reminder with each passing streetcar.

Come and enjoy the lifestyle you deserve!
